The mission of the Somali Bantu Community of Erie is to assist members in the community on employment, literacy, housing and education, this includes empowering the youth and families achieve their goals
Our history
The Somali Bantu people are descendants of various Bantu ethnic groups from east Africa, brought to Somalia through centuries of Arab slave trade and as migratory farmers, they settled in the river valleys of southern Somalia primarily as farmers, and faced centuries of discrimination, oppression, and marginalization, during Somalia's civil war in the 1990's they were violently displaced and targeted leading many to flee to refugee camps in neighboring Kenya, in the early 2000's thousands we re-settled to the United states and other countries, beginning new lives after en-during severe hardships.

Slave trade and migration
the most significant group of Somali Bantu descendants were brought to Somalia as slave by Arab and Persian slave traders starting in the 18th century , others arrived as migratory farmers or through later forced labor schemes, introduce by Italian colonial authorities.
Settlement and livelihood
They settled primarily in the agricultural Juba and Shabelle river valleys in southern Somalia, their lives were centered around farming, a stark contrast to nomadic, Pastoralism of ethnic Somalis.
